From Denver
Take I-70 west to exit 203 at Frisco, then CO-9 south to Breckenridge. Plan on about two hours on a clear day and a lot longer on a snowy weekend. Coming from the south, CO-9 crosses Hoosier Pass at over 11,500 feet.
The traction law
From September 1 to May 31, Colorado's traction law covers I-70 from Dotsero to Morrison. Your tires need at least 3/16 inch of tread and an M+S, mountain snowflake or all-weather rating, even on AWD and 4WD. Otherwise carry chains or an approved traction device. The fine starts at $50 plus a $17 surcharge, and much more if you block traffic.
No car?
Epic Mountain Express runs shuttles from DEN to Breck. Book at least 24 hours ahead.
