Hike it like a local
- Start before dawn. Afternoon thunderstorms build almost every day in July and August. Be off the summit by noon.
- Acclimate first. Spend a day or two in town before you go for a 14er.
- Dogs: leashed dogs are welcome on Quandary, McCullough Gulch and Mohawk Lakes. Bring water for them too.
- Leave no trace. Pack out everything, including dog bags.
Know before you go
- Quandary and McCullough Gulch need a reservation or shuttle in summer. No parking on Blue Lakes or McCullough Gulch roads.
- Carry a CORSAR card. $3 a year funds search and rescue.
- Snow lingers on high trails into July.
- Lightning is the biggest summer danger up high. Turn around early.

How long is the Quandary Peak hike?
The standard East Ridge route is about 6.75 miles round trip with about 3,450 feet of gain, starting from the Quandary trailhead at 10,850 feet south of Breckenridge.
Do I need a reservation to hike Quandary Peak?
In summer, yes. You need a parking reservation or a shuttle ticket from hikequandary.com. In 2026 the system ran June 13 to September 13. Check for 2027 dates.
What is the best easy hike in Breckenridge?
Sallie Barber Mine off French Gulch Rd is about 2.8 miles round trip with under 400 feet of gain, and it is dog friendly.
Can I hike Mount Bross?
The Decalibron loop trail is open, but the summit of Mount Bross is still closed private land. Stay on the designated trail.
